Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi My rating: 2 of 5 stars Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi was an alright read that just needed more time spent in the planning stages. This book started out great, there was an interesting plotline about a woman with a chronic illness that struggled to afford to pay for her and her aunt’s medication but she loved working on space ships and mechanical things so. Ascension features a protagonist (named Alana) who is a black woman who is also a lesbian, and who struggles with chronic pain. She also a spaceship engineer who dreams of sailing the stars. Ascension, Jacqueline Koyanagi’s debut novel, is just that rare thing. Its diversity—its perspective —is not one we see very often, and played a large part in how much I enjoyed it.
